Even as the protesters had initially announced to hold demonstrations in area around the Messehallen where the heads of state are meeting, the protest spread across the city.

What initially started as a peaceful demonstration gradually turned violent after angry mob attacked riot police after iron rods, stones and bottles among others.  The riot police contained the mob with water cannon, teargas and other non lethal weapons.

In some places the mob also set several cars into blaze, vandalized public and private property and looted shops.

The organizers, who have remained anonymous, have refused to take responsibility of violence saying that thugs disguised as protesters were behind violent activities. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has criticized violence but praised those protesters who were too peaceful medium for protest.
